BMI
BMI or Body Mass Index is a widely used method used to determine whether a person is of a healthy weight. It is a calculation designed to assess how overweight (or underweight) a person might be relative to their height.
Weight
Height (m) x Height (m)
Adults should aim for a BMI between the 18.5- 24.9 range. The world health organisation WHO has recommended that the following categorise be used
BMI |
Grade |
<18.5 |
Underweight |
18.5-25 |
Normal weight |
>25-29.9 |
Overweight (Grade 1 obesity) |
>30 |
Obese (Grade 2 obesity) |
>40 |
Morbidly obese |
There are groups of people who may not fall into these categories. These may include athletes as their body may be composed of more muscle than a person of the same weight that works in an office. But BMI is a good point of reference.
